Image of Sh2-129 and OU4 co-winner of the December Pretty Picture Award Bob Ostrander Data was provided by Bob Ostrander.
Here’s what Bob had to say about his image.
The Flying Bat Nebula, Sh2-129, is a hydrogen gas cloud in the constellation Cepheus. In 2011, an amateur astrophotographer, Nicholas Outters, discovered The Giant Squid Nebula, Ou4. The squid is very faint and composed of doubly ionized oxygen atoms driven outward by a trio of massive blue-white stars. Both nebulae are about 2 300 light years distant which is consistent with an actual size of 50 light years for Ou4.
