Smash Hit Observing Session at DHO Last Night

Saturday, September 16th, 2017

About 8 scopes and 20 or so members/public viewed the heavens last night at DHO.

The soon to be repaired (still about $500 short) chart room was toured. Hoping that we’ll have use of the big scope back by the October 21st observing session.

SEPTEMBER MEETING: The Society’s next monthly meeting and public presentation, “How Telescopes Changed Our Understanding of the Universe”  will be at 7:00 PM, Saturday, September 23, 2017 in Room 343 Ferrante Hall, Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York.

An urgent appeal to society members and to all interested in amateur astronomy in Central New York:

Sunday, September 10th, 2017
As noted earlier this summer, in the interest of safety all use of our main telescope and chart room at Darling Hill Observatory was suspended due to severe annual winter weather damage. Multiple chart room roof joists have failed. The observation deck roof can no longer safely be rolled back over the chart room until the roof and joists are replaced.

An appeal for funds last spring helped, yet today, the society remains approximately $1,000.00 short of its fundraising goal to complete repairs. To enable use of the observatory this fall, we must start construction by mid-September. A reputable contractor awaits our raising sufficient funding for this essential project.

Your tax-deductible donation would be greatly appreciated. The Syracuse Astronomical Society is a Section 501(c)(3) Corporation. On behalf of the SAS board, thank you in advance as the society celebrates its 97th year!
