SAS Members, We’re on for tonight! Our final regularly-scheduled public observing session is on for tonight, 10/14 at Darling Hill Observatory in Tully, NY. Sunset will be at about 6:30 and the waning gibbous moon will be up around 10:00. We’ll have Jupiter and Saturn well positioned in the southeast and Mars a bit later. The temperatures have been cool at night and getting cooler, so dress warmly. Hat & gloves highly recommended. Come down and join us!
Following the dissassembly of my mount, the cleaning and reassembly went surprisingly smoothly. I spent most of my time sanding and polishing the ring bearings and the mount where they mated. You can see from this image of the cleaned up bearing that there was some rubbing on the bearing which was probably causing some of the stickiness. I thought it might have been from the clutch, but if that slips, it’s just a little bit from handling the mount. That mark went around the entire ring. “The show must go on!” was the underlying theme of last night’s outreach event in the Town of Lysander. Hurricane Ian’s huge high-cloud shield eventually overtook all of CNY and bands of heavier clouds plagued our visability from the start. Undaunted, and well prepared with trusty “Plan B”s (and some Vitamin O), the all-volunteer crew of hearty SAS members arrived in time to set up our equipment for the 8PM gala.
